چکیده

The widely used split-step Fourier method has difficulties when solving partial differential equations with saturable gain. Here, we describe a modified split-step Fourier method, and we compare it to several different algorithms for solving the Haus mode-locking equation and related equations that are used to model mode-locked lasers and other optical oscillators and amplifiers with saturable gain. These equations all include the product of a scalar nonlinearity and a stiff nonlinear operator. We find that a modified split-step method is the easiest to program with the same level of reliability and accuracy as the other methods that we investigated. © 2013 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (000.4430) Numerical approximation and analysis; (140.3280) Laser amplifiers; (140.4050) Mode-locked lasers. http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/JOSAB.30.003064

Mode-locking pulse dynamics in a fiber laser with a saturable Bragg reflector

A theoretical model is developed for the pulse dynamics in a fiber laser mode locked by a saturable Bragg reflector and operating in regimes beyond the scope of the master mode-locking equation. An asymptotically valid mode-locked evolution equation is derived, which includes a heuristic model for the saturable Bragg reflector dynamics. The model employed allows, for the first time to our knowl...

Wavelength-Versatile Graphene-Gold Film Saturable Absorber Mirror for Ultra-Broadband Mode-Locking of Bulk Lasers

An ultra-broadband graphene-gold film saturable absorber mirror (GG-SAM) with a spectral coverage exceeding 1300 nm is experimentally demonstrated for mode-locking of bulk solid-state lasers. Owing to the p-type doping effect caused by graphene-gold film interaction, the graphene on gold-film substrate shows a remarkably lower light absorption relative to pristine graphene, which is very helpfu...

Analysis of Temporal Pulse Development in Passively Mode-Locked Lasers

Pulse-shortening and pulse broadening effects in passively mode-locked lasers are analysed. A steady-state pulse duration limit is calculated and compared with round-trip simulations. The numerical calculations apply to a picosecond N d : glass laser. Methods of short-pulse generation are discussed. PACS: 42.55R, 42.60D, 42.65 In passively mode-locked pulsed lasers the statistical spontaneous e...

Mode-locking of an Er:Yb:glass laser with single layer graphene

Pulses as short as 260fs have been generated in an Er:Yb:glass laser by saturable absorber mode-locking using graphene as the only mode-locking mechanism. These novel saturable absorbers present a low-cost, ultra-broadband alternative to traditional SESAMs.

Modeling of mode locking in a laser with spatially separate gain media.

We present a novel laser mode locking scheme and discuss its unusual properties and feasibility using a theoretical model. A large set of single-frequency continuous-wave lasers oscillate by amplification in spatially separated gain media. They are mutually phase-locked by nonlinear feedback from a common saturable absorber. As a result, ultra-short pulses are generated. The new scheme offers t...
